A Very Big, Very Bad Deal

Our POTUS (President of the United States) is well-known for the business deals he has made over his adult years.  Those deals have added to his inherited wealth, building for him an "empire".  All of this preceded his ascension to the US presidency.

Have you ever made a bad deal?  There's an expression that goes "made a deal with the Devil". Goodness gracious!  I hope none of you have made a deal like that!

We find deals struck in the Bible, some of them good ones, others not good.  One of them, in fact, the writer of Hebrews calls "unholy".  That deal was not only detrimental to the one who made it; it had long-lasting, far-reaching consequences.

15See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; 16that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.
Hebrews 12:15-17 NET

The story can be found in Genesis 25, and though the story won't be reproduced here, do go read it.   The gist of it was this:  Esau had been given by God the privilege of being firstborn of twins.  The Bible records Esau emerged from the womb first, but that his twin brother Jacob came out holding on to Esau's heel!  So, it was "Esau for the win, by a hair", so to speak.

Being the firstborn son was "a huge deal" (pun intended), in Old Testament times.  It carried with it many rights, privileges and wealth not accorded the younger children.  As a young man Esau lacked judgment and was full of pride.  When he made his very bad deal, he did not think it was such a BIG deal (sorry...my "punnishness" is punishing you, I know.)

24When the time came for Rebekah to give birth, there were twins in her womb. 25The first came out reddish all over, like a hairy garment, so they named him Esau. 26When his brother came out with his hand clutching Esau’s heel, they named him Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.
27When the boys grew up, Esau became a skilled hunter, a man of the open fields, but Jacob was an even-tempered man, living in tents. 28Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for fresh game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
29Now Jacob cooked some stew, and when Esau came in from the open fields, he was famished. 30So Esau said to Jacob, “Feed me some of the red stuff – yes, this red stuff – because I’m starving!” (That is why he was also called Edom.)
31But Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.” 32“Look,” said Esau, “I’m about to die! What use is the birthright to me?” 33But Jacob said, “Swear an oath to me now.” So Esau swore an oath to him and sold his birthright to Jacob.
34Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and lentil stew; Esau ate and drank, then got up and went out. So Esau despised his birthright.
Genesis 25:24-34 NET

The Hebrew word "despised" in verse 34 is  way-yi-ḇez and is found in only one other place in the OT Bible (Esther 3:6), where it is applied to Haman.  It is variously translated in Genesis 25:34 as "showed contempt for" or "belittled".  Essentially, Esau believed that he did not need his God-given birthright - - - that he could do just fine without it.  Or, perhaps he believed that his bad bargain with his brother could be undone.  Regardless, all of his reasoning in this life-changing situation was faulty.  He made an unholy deal from an unholy heart, because he did not value the gift God had given him.  And, the course of human history was completely changed, as a result.

As we examine our lives today, Christians, what gift or gifts has God given you that perhaps you have allowed Satan to convince you are worthless?  Satan loves to do that, you know - - - to convince us that our gifts aren't worth spit.  He loves to deceive us into believing we don't matter, that God's calling on us is insignificant.  If he can keep us in that mindset, then we accomplish little for God's kingdom, which makes room for Satan to create more havoc among those in God's kingdom and beyond.  We can look at unholy Esau and "tsk tsk".  But, are we any different when we reject God's calling on our lives?  Not really.  The consequences may or may not be as earth-changing. Remember: Esau did not think selling his birthright was significant either.  After he ate and drank (vs. 34), he "got up and went out" - - - apparently thinking no more of it.

I heard Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, say last week that we need in this country a "guaranteed minimum salary", that is, a minimum salary that is paid to every citizen, regardless of whether they work or how much they work.  What an unbiblical idea!

We tend to think that, if something is not easy, it is then neither holy, nor valuable.  We view opposition, trials and roadblocks as God's "no".  What inaccurate, unholy thinking!  God ministers to us in difficult times.  He grows and matures us then, as long as we don't wiggle out from under his tutelage, choosing an easier path. Difficulty (extreme hunger) compelled Esau to make his very bad deal, after all.  God's grace was available to him in that situation; yet, he chose the easy way out.

God does not always spare us the consequences of our unfortunate trades, our costly deals with the deceiver.  I am thankful that, on the contrary, sometimes He does.  But, do we really want to play such a game of "Russian Roulette"?

Sacrificing the long-lasting, even the eternal, on the altar of the immediate has ruined millions of precious souls!
A far better mindset and attitude is to keep our hearts as attuned to His as we possibly can, seeking Him in every decision.  How can we know which of our choices will forever change the world? There is one choice which, as long as each of us has breath, can be changed for the better.  If you, like Esau, have persisted in unbelief concerning Jesus Christ, you can, as long as you draw breath in this world, change that terrible decision for the better.

At the heart of Esau's mistake was his unbelief and his brother, Jacob's, belief.  Jacob believed God's promises and esteemed them; Esau did not.  According to the Bible, the grandaddy of bad deals is the "deal with the Devil", because that is a deal which leads to an eternity in Hell.

God's number one gift to you, His number one promise, is that if you call on the name of His Son, Jesus, as your Savior and accept Him as your Lord, you will make the best deal you can ever make. Now, THAT is the deal of a lifetime!

And, if you have already taken advantage of God's offer of salvation, if you have already surrendered to the lordship of Jesus Christ, search your heart today to find the additional gifts He has given you. Then, believe Him!  Don't despise your gifts!  Embrace them and work them, so that God through you can change the world!

Naked Dream | Naked Truth

Surely, you have had "the naked dream"!  You know....the one where you are out in public somewhere and, inexplicably, you find yourself completely unclothed?  Scandalized and horrified, you seek cover wherever you can find it.  Why do we dream such anxious things as this?  Who knows? I had a psychology prof who claimed that dreaming was God's way of cleaning out our brains, getting rid of the junk so that we could wake refreshed the next morning.  That's as good an explanation as any, I suppose.

The first time we encounter nakedness in the Bible is in the Garden of Eden.  Apparently, before the forbidden fruit incident of disobedience, Adam and Eve were in the Garden unclothed.  They did not realize this to be an issue.  None of the animals wore clothes, and neither did they.  Life was good. Interestingly, in their first interaction with God after sin entered into humanity through them, they hid from God because they were "naked".  God, who already knew what the Serpent had done, asked them rhetorically, "Who told you you were naked?"  The story is found in Genesis 3.

Our verses for today are Hebrews 4:12-13 (ESV) - -

12For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Unbelievers hate the Bible.  That is why when you meet people who have rejected Christ, the first thing they put to you is how the Bible is "just a book" and "who builds his life on a book?"

The Bible testifies of itself here in verse 12.  Now, literally, in the way animals are "alive", the Bible is not a living organism.  However, it is the living Word of God, in the sense that its supernatural words are as relevant and powerful to people today as they have been for the past several thousand years.  It is through the Bible that we learn of our own sinfulness...as a race of humans, and as individuals.

The Bible exposes us and our sin.  It removes our ignorance about our sinful condition.  It shines a bright, piercing light on the great gulf between us and a holy God.  Such revelation either drives us toward God or away from Him.  There is no "in-between".

Don't be fooled into Satan's lie of "secret sin".  There is no such thing.  It's not a dream, naked or otherwise.  God sees all.

"Can a man hide himself in hiding places So I do not see him?" declares the LORD. "Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?" declares the LORD.
Jeremiah 23:24 (NIV)

"It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, And the light dwells with Him.
Daniel 2:22 (NIV)

If you are an unbeliever, you can throw all kinds of arguments at me as to why the Bible is "just a book", and I can show you proof after proof to demonstrate to you why it is much, much more!  But, you know what?  That's not the issue.  The issue is sin....favorite sins so cherished they are chosen over a living, eternal relationship with the one, true God.

That is the issue which must be settled, the eternal choice which must be made.
And, that's The Naked Truth.

Dear Holy, Loving Savior, I thank you that the first objective of grace is not to cover our sins but rather to confront us with them.  We cannot repent until we first acknowledge that we are utterly sinful and, simultaneously, helpless to rescue ourselves from sin's bondage.  Open our eyes, Lord, and at the same time, soften our hearts so that your saving, transformative grace can flow in.  In Jesus' name, amen.

The Ultimate Sin

This being Election Day in the USA, some of you, my readers, may think that voting for a candidate who was not YOUR choice could be "the ultimate sin"!  But, that is not what today's post is about.

What do you think of when you consider "the ultimate sin"?  What would it be?  Murder (abortion, homocide, serial killing)?  Sexual assault (rape, child pornography, incest)?  Lying?  Thievery?

As horrific and heinous as all of these sins (and many more) are, they can all be put under the blood of Jesus Christ.  In other words, those sins, if confessed, will be forgiven by God.  There is one sin which will not.

When I was a young parent....well, actually, I was never a YOUNG parent, becoming one at age 35.   But, when I had young children I believed that I would "raise them right".  I knew Jesus then, as now, and knew how principles of godly living were the best prescription out there for success in life.  So, I was excited to "train them up in the way they should go" (Proverbs 22:6).  Around 9th grade, however, they stopped listening to me.  I was completely flummoxed!  I asked God repeatedly, "Why did you give me and my husband these gifts of wisdom, which are being wasted?"  (No, disobeying one's parents is not "the ultimate sin"!)  There are few worse feelings than either wondering if your child has taken your training to heart or, worse, seeing the incontrovertible evidence that they have not.  Still, they are our children; and, we love them.

I guess that is how God felt with the Hebrew children. Finally, with the incident at Kadesh, He removed His hand of blessing from that repeatedly disobedient generation entirely.  I'm pretty sure it is how He feels about us "wayward children" every moment of every day.

Being wayward is one thing.  All of us who love and follow Jesus as Savior make mistakes, wrong choices, say unholy things, think unholy thoughts DAILY as we struggle with our still-present sin natures. We won't be free of that struggle until we die and are face-to-face with Jesus.  When we sin in this manner, there is no doubt that our sin grieves the Holy Spirit who lives within us.  Charles Spurgeon describes this grief as, not anger, but rather, a combination of anger tempered with love.1 When we Christians sin, we "quench the fire" of the Holy Spirit in our lives; this causes Him great sorrow.  The remedy is quick confession of that sin, repentance, forgiveness and restoration.

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Ephesians 4:30

The Ultimate Sin is quite another thing entirely, and some of the Hebrews at Kadesh were guilty of it. This sin underlies and gives birth to every other sin. The writer of Hebrews devotes one and a half chapters of his book to it, using the Hebrews in the desert outside Canaan as his "Exhibit A".

The Ultimate Sin is also called in the New Testament "blaspheming the Holy Spirit".  Jesus speaks of it in Matthew 12:22-32 and also in Mark 3:28-30 (given below).  In the Matthew passage, Jesus is performing miracles, which have been seen by a group of Pharisees.  They heard His words of life-saving truth. These men were presented with incontrovertible evidence that Jesus is Messiah.  Yet, they attribute His miracles to Satan.  In fact, they accused Jesus of being possessed by demons.  "Standing before the Light of the World, bathed in His glory, they defiantly closed their eyes and became willfully blind.  Jesus pronounced that sin to be unforgivable."2
Jesus' words in Mark 3 - -

28I tell you the truth, people will be forgiven for all sins, even all the blasphemies they utter. 29But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, but is guilty of an eternal sin” 30(because they said, “He has an unclean spirit”).

Calling God a liar by rejecting Him: this is The Ultimate Sin...the sin with eternal consequences, the sin that will not be forgiven, the sin that sends a person to Hell.  "Unbelief encompasses disobedience, for it is BOTH the refusal (or willing failure) to trust God and the consequent lack of faithfulness TO God."3  It springs from a rebellious heart but becomes real in the concrete act of refusal.  This is fatal unbelief.  Eternally fatal.

In the USA this is Election Day, but it is also "Today".  Hebrews 3:7 - - -

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
"Oh, that today you would listen as He speaks!"

There are some of you reading this who are rejecting God and His pleading for your soul.  You want no part of Him.  I beg you to reconsider.  Jesus made it plain that the person who rejects God and His "one way" to Heaven will NOT end up there, after this physical life ends.  Not a single person is promised one.more.day. on this Earth.  Over the last week, I have learned of two acquaintances who died almost instantly. Death was not on their agendas that day.  One was in her 70s; the other was in his 20s.  Thanking God that, from all I could tell, both knew Jesus Christ as Savior and so, therefore, are rejoicing with Him in Heaven right now.

Surrender to the Lover of your Soul today.  Here's how: (skip down to the ***section)

http://resplendentdaughter.blogspot.com/2014/07/the-main-thing.html

Lord Jesus, I am so thankful that never, ever again will I have to live one moment apart from You.  I am Yours, and You are mine.  Still, my heart breaks for those who are rejecting You, even as You extend the invitation for rescue, day after day. The enemy has blinded so many.  I pray that Your Holy Spirit will not give up on those we love so dearly.  I plead for them today, Lord God, while they have "Today".  Open their eyes and give them a glimpse of who You really are!  Have patience greater than that of any human's, Lord!  Please draw them to Yourself.  Please save them.  In Jesus' name, amen.

Frankensteinian Spirituality

You may be familiar with a fictional novel, Frankenstein, written in the early 1800s, by a young Englishwoman, Mary Shelley.  It was a short work of gothic horror and science fiction, one of the earliest, and has become an American classic1.  The story is of a young scientist, who is able to create a "living" man from the various parts of other dead humans - - - a brain here, a torso there, you get the picture.  Grotesque, isn't it?

The modern day parallel is the immensely popular television series, The Walking Dead.  Man has for centuries been fascinated with bringing the dead to life again, and has tried many different approaches to make this happen.  I'll spare you the gory historical and deeply-buried (if you'll pardon the heinous pun) details.

Since death is our enemy, we try to slay it in our own power.  And, especially in the realm of the spiritual, again, the results of such misguided attempts are grotesque.

1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.
Ephesians 2:1-3 (NET)

Here, Paul describes what it is like to be spiritually dead, by using the analogy of physical death, something every human comes to understand, sooner or later.  Let's decompose it (sorry...my macabre humor is out of control).

  • First of all, what killed the spirit of man?  Answer: trespasses and sins.  "Trespasses" or "transgressions" in some passages, means to "wander off the path" or "fall off the wagon". "Sins" is a word Paul uses in the general sense to mean "falling short of God's standard" or "missing the mark" (Benson)2  We are told in Romans 6:23 that the consequences of sin is spiritual death.
  • Second, what does spiritual death mean?  It means that the human, although physically alive, is living under the control and rule of the evil one and/or his minions/demons.  Now, I predict that, at this point, some of you are going to "bow up", raise your hackles, and disagree with that last statement.  The Bible is plain, however.  Each person alive today is either serving and following Satan, OR he/she is serving and following Father God, Jesus Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit.  There's no other option given or allowed.  Serving the former leads to eternal spiritual death, the experiencing of God's wrath; serving the latter leads to an eternity of life and joy.
  • Third, what does this "walking in death" look like?  It is demonstrated by a life disobedient to the ways of God, habitually, as one's custom, indulging the desires of the body and a dead, corrupted mind.  It is evidenced by rebellion, going one's own way, by a careless disregard or disdain for "the Way, the Truth, the Life", Jesus Christ.  Look how The Message version described that old, stagnant life-walk of spiritual death.  "You filled your lungs with polluted unbelief, and then exhaled disobedience.  We all did it, all of us doing what we felt like doing, whenever we felt like doing it, all of us in the same boat."

Pretty damning, isn't it?

So damning that most people will not accept this truth, even though acknowledging it is a foundational prerequisite for becoming spiritually alive.  How can one be made alive, if he or she will not even accept that he or she is dead?!  It is impossible, just as impossible as it is for a person to make him or herself spiritually alive.

Oh, but we try.  We make our spirits Frankensteinian!  (I'm told that adjective is not a word; but, I'm ignoring....)  We put on masks to hide the depths of our sin and despair.  We use techniques like "self-improvement" or "social justice" or "charity" or "service leagues" - - - and we make of ourselves spiritually-dead zombies.  None of the "good works" mentioned are bad things, unless they are used in attempts to "raise the dead" soul. Properly used, these things are OUTWORKINGS from an alive spirit; they flow out of the abundance of the transformed, Christ-follower!  Look....

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away.  Behold!  All things have become new!"
2 Cor. 5:17 (NKJV)

In the original King James version, the word "creation" is "creature" - - a beautiful, new, alive creature, not a cobbled-together horror show.  Only the true, living Savior, Jesus Christ, can bring the dead spirit to life.  Only He can make this transformation. (John 14:6)

Lay down your bone saw and scalpels, Dr. Frankenstein, and open your arms to the Living One, the only One who gives eternal life!

Dear Father, I was bemused to see when I googled the word "Therefore", the first word in 2 Cor. 5:17, that verse immediately popped up.  Probably, it is the most important "therefore" in the entire Bible.  I praise You, the only One who can raise the dead, the only One who can give life eternal.  I thank You for giving it to me, and I pray for those reading this who may have seen themselves in a Frankensteinian state and who long to be re-born, made new, re-created, made alive by Your almighty hand.  I pray that they will put their hand in your outstretched hand today, Lord.  In Jesus' name, amen.
